For Such A Time As This

The biblical account of the creation of man says, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen. 2:7). This is not said of any other creature of God. He breathed His breath into the nostrils of man causing him to become a living soul. Man was not created to die, but to live forever. The breath of God that sparked life into the still and lifeless clay form is what makes man eternal.

Frankly, I am tired of watching coal mining jobs disappear. I am tired of watching families lose homes and cars, lose their life-savings, their retirement and health plans. I am tired of watching men and women who should be working and raising a family, who don’t want handouts and just want to work, standing in unemployment lines.Every year, each working Appalachian coal miner provides the coal that heats and lights 773 homes across the country. Think about that for a minute ...

So you thought Mingo County politics was bizarre?Last week, four West Virginia state senators and at least one staffer traveled to Plains, Georgia, to present former President Jimmy Carter with an award. The certificate, issued by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, declared Carter to be an “Honorary West Virginian.”While one of the senators said the proclamation was issued in honor of Carter’s birthday, nothing on the certificate actually explained what the for...

For A Time Such As This

It is neither the scope nor intent of this writing to get involved with in-depth scientific explanations of the body. The Scriptures give a foundation that inspires our appreciation of the exquisite, unique, and delicate nature of the body, revealing God’s marvelous works toward us. However, a few aspects of the wonders of our unique design are relevant.

EPA going beyond constitutional authorityDear Editor:Article I Section 1 of the Constitution says the following:All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a congress of the United States, which shall consist of a senate and House of Representatives. Nowhere does it say that an employee of the Federal Government can write a law. The problem with the Environmental Protection Agency is that they are going beyond their constitutional...

If we’d just send Shelley Moore Capito to Washington, the coal trucks would start rolling again.Oh … wait … we’ve already sent her to Congress and … well, coal is in big trouble. The lunacy of political campaigns would sometimes cause a sane person to crumble. Capito’s ads and campaign pronouncements make it appear her election to the U.S. Senate seat being given up by Jay Rockefeller would save West Virginia coal. I would sugg...

Everybody in Logan County is about to be indicted.I’m operating on the premise that nobody can make it through an entire day without somehow breaking a law or statute. Most will let their vehicle drift left of center. Others will jaywalk, tell a little white lie or worse. This indictment theory seems to be the logic used by those who despise some Logan County officials. Every day, these cynics expect a dozen indictments to be handed down. Those who have been claimin...

Are E-cigarettes safe?

The Food and Drug Administration is trying to get a handle on new smoking products, including electronic cigarettes, with newly proposed regulations that include banning sales to minors and requiring manufacturers to register all of their products and ingredients with the FDA.“I like these proposals; the public needs clarity on smoking alternatives because we have 42.1 million adult tobacco smokers [CDC, 2012] who may be able to benefit from them,” says Anthony Sarvucci...

A political columnist’s dream come true. That’s Mingo County.Where do we begin? A fight in the County Clerk’s office? A mad scramble to field a candidate, any candidate, to run for county commissioner? Law enforcement officials who, after the fight broke out, don’t seem to know where the courthouse is? State officials opposed to letting the Mingo voters choose their own Family Court judge?Truth is stranger than fiction in Mingo. I couldn&...
