Lady Skyhawks win over Lady Miners

MADISON – Scott High School lost W. Va. Player of the Year Makenzie White to graduation, but the now Class AA No. 4 ranked Lady Skyhawks returned several other players from last year.


They defeated Mingo Central Thursday night 50-43 in a hard-fought game by both teams.


Kiearia Hammond led the Lady Miners with 10 points, while Miranda Evans banked in nine and Brittany Maynard and Ashley Curry each chipped in seven.


Brittany Stumbo came off the bench to score six, while Chrissy Farmer added four.


Jamiee Dotson scored 15 for Scott, while Ali Whitman added 13 and Julie Conway nine to lead the Lady Skyhawks.


Once again Mingo Central was cold at the charity stripe. They connected on 14-26 from the foul line for 53 percent, while Scott was 13-23 for 57 percent. The difference in the game was in the paint. Scott made 17 baskets and only one 3-pointer, while Mingo Central only made 10 baskets, but had a trio of 3-pointers for their total.

In other high school girls basketball action: Elk Valley Christian deafeated the Lady Sherman Tide 62 to 56.


SHERMAN 58, LIBERTY 37: Three players scored in double figures to lead Sherman to the road victory.


Jordan Lewis led the Tide (3-2) with 18 points and Sarah Massey added 17 and Lacey Pettry finished with 11. Jasmine Law scored 14 points to lead Liberty (0-6) with Stacey Williams pitching in with 10 points.


HOOVER 66, VAN 8: Herbert Hoover ran out to a 26-2 advantage after the first period and never looked back at the Sherman Holiday Tournament.

  • SCOTT 54, WAYNE 25: Ali Whitman scored 13 points as Scott (4-1) downed visiting Wayne.

  • Tasha Maynard had 13 points for the Pioneers (1-5).
