The 2013 edition of the Boone County Grid Classic is set for Friday, August 23, 2013 at Scott High School in Madison. All three (3) Boone County high schools will scrimmage each other in a final tune up for the regular season which begins on August 29th.
“The Grid Classic has quickly become a popular community event for the county” says Rob Nelson, event organizer. Bands, cheerleaders, majorettes and football players from all high schools, junior highs, middle schools and the five (5) youth football organizations in the county join together in this annual event to kick off a new football season.
The opening ceremony is considered by many to be a highlight of the event. During the ceremony, more than 300 student-athletes from the participating county schools and youth programs are introduced to the community. The ceremony also includes a joint performance by the Sherman and Scott High School marching bands of our national anthem.
This year’s Grid Classic is dedicated to Boone County coal miners and the opening ceremony will include a tribute to them. “This tribute is not intended to be a memorial service or to make a political statement” says Nelson. “Rather, it is an opportunity for the community to celebrate our coal mining dads, granddads and friends and to simply say ‘thank you’”.
“I am very excited about the coal miner tribute”, says Nelson. “Most, if not all, of us have a family member who is a coal miner. I am proud of my coal mining heritage and thankful for my dad who spent his life mining coal while helping to raise five kids in the process. Friday evening, August 23rd is an opportunity for the entire Boone County community to publicly show our appreciation for our coal miners.”
Gates open at 5 pm and the opening ceremony begins at 6 pm. “I encourage everyone to be in their seats by 6 pm”, commented Nelson. “I can think of nothing better than for our coal miners to see every seat occupied on this special evening.”
Admission is $7. (Admission is free if not yet in 1st grade). The price of admission includes access to bouncy / inflatable games which will be supervised. All admission proceeds will be shared evenly among the three high schools.
