MADISON — The Boone County Grid Classic is scheduled for Aug. 23 at Scott High School in Madison.

It will consist of three scrimmages, with each one featuring a pair of 15-minute continuous quarters. Scott will face Sherman in the first scrimmage, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by Sherman versus Van in the second and Scott versus Van in the third.

Gates will open at 5 p.m.

Thanks to Bill Raney and the West Virginia Coal Association, coaches Don Nehlen and Bob Pruett will participate in this year’s event. The coaches will be available for autographs and to meet the public beginning at 5:15 p.m. and will participate in the opening ceremony.

“Boone County is fortunate to have caring people who are the driving force behind this event,” said event coordinator Rob Nelson. “Without the commitment of Chris Adkins, Director of Driven Knights, Inc. a non-profit community organization; Mark Sumpter, President of the Boone County Board of Education; John Hudson, Superintendent of Boone County Schools, and, Mike Day, Executive Vice President of Patriot Coal this annual event would not happen. And, when Bill Raney, President of the West Virginia Coal Association informed me that he and coach Nehlen and coach Pruett would participate in this year’s event, I just about fell out of my chair. Boone County is abuzz with excitement!”

Gates open at 5 p.m. and the opening ceremony begins at 6 p.m.

“I encourage everyone to arrive early”, commented Nelson. “I can think of nothing better than for our coal miners to see every seat occupied on this special evening.”

Representing the Friends of Coal, former West Virginia Coach Don Nehlen and former Marshall Coach Bob Pruett will be available for photos and autographs at 5:15 p.m.

Pre-game festivities will begin at 5:45 p.m.

They will include the participating schools’ cheerleaders and majorettes and the surrounding communities’ youth teams.

Admission is $7. (Admission is free if not yet in 1st grade). The price of admission includes access to bouncy / inflatable games which will be supervised. All admission proceeds will be shared evenly among the three high schools.
