POCA — The Van Middle School Bulldogs get another shot at George Washington this Saturday after closing out the regular season last Thursday with a 31-14 win over Poca.
The victory left the Van season record at 7-1, the only loss coming to GW, the defending Black Diamond Conference champions.
The title game will be played this Saturday, November 2, at Scott High School’s football complex. Kick-off is set for 10:30 a.m. The Blue Devils defeated Van, 44-38, earlier this season.
“We are excited about the opportunity to play GW again,” said Coach Ronald Deal. “Our kids have worked hard and are eager for the challenge. Until last year, we had not had a middle school football program for the previous four seasons. To have an opportunity to represent our school, our community and one another in a championship game, in just two seasons back in the mold, truly reflects the will and character of our kids. They want the opportunity to succeed.”
In the Poca game, Van’s Drew Price joined teammate Brady Grant as a 1,000-yard rusher for the season. He compiled 1,104 yards on the year while Grant rushed for 1,293.
Coach Deal added, “We had two running backs rush for more than 1,000 yards and our quarterback, Taylor Jarrell, threw for just over 800 yards this season. That’s not a small accomplishment in middle school football, only playing eight-minute quarters in just eight games. It’s a reflection of how hard the entire team has worked. They could not accomplish such numbers without everyone contributing.”
The coach concluded, “Our parents and community have been great. The team would like to thank everyone for supporting us and coming out to watch us on the field. We look forward to seeing everyone Saturday morning at Scott High School. We’ll be ready and we will be focused.”
