It is neither the scope nor intent of this writing to get involved with in-depth scientific explanations of the body. The Scriptures give a foundation that inspires our appreciation of the exquisite, unique, and delicate nature of the body, revealing God’s marvelous works toward us. However, a few aspects of the wonders of our unique design are relevant.
It is nothing short of amazement to contemplate on all that the human body is and what it is capable of performing. For example, a body is capable of swallowing something very cold and warming it up to an acceptable temperature during the short time and distance it travels to the stomach. Also, something very hot can be cooled down in the same manner. Without this capacity of the body, we would not be able to eat various kinds of foods. Then consider the air we breathe. We can take in frigid air and by the time it reaches our lungs, it is warmed sufficiently so as not to do us harm. Our reflexes are fast enough to protect us from dangers that come our way in a split second. Our eyes can focus clearly on a period at the end of a sentence and immediately look into outer space to see the stars that God has flung out there. Then they can re-focus on a close-up object without any complicated adjustments having to be made by our conscious awareness. The brain is capable of storing, sorting and recalling many thousands of things instantly. We have considered only a very few things the body is designed to do. Hundreds of other things even more marvelous than these are performed every day without our conscious awareness. Truly, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
What is it about man that makes him so important to God? The Scriptures in Psalms 8:4-6 gives us a glimpse of our importance to God: ‘What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet.” We were made higher than all other created earthly beings. We were given dominion over these lesser creatures. God also gave us dominion over the works of His hands and has put all things under our feet. We were made in the image of God, something that is not said of any other of His creation. All things were created for our enjoyment and well being. Truly God is mindful of us and has a very high purpose in the reason why He created us and He has a very special purpose for making us after this fashion.
We were made a little lower than the angels who are ministering spirits. Man only was given the power of choice. Colossians 1:16 tells us that all things were created by Him and for Him. Revelation 4:11 says, “…for thy pleasure they are and were created.” First Peter chapter two and verse nine says that we should “…shew forth the praises of him who hath called you [us] out of darkness into his marvelous light.” The ultimate purpose of God in creating man was that He might have creatures that would voluntarily show forth His praise throughout eternity on the basis of choice. He created the earth as a place of habitation for the human race that we may develop, in this present life, a desire to worship Him and that we should be made perfect through the things that we would endure in the setting of our earthly existence. We were created and designed so that “…in him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28.
Only God can design and make a creature such as man with both a highly complicated spirit and body. We are not the products of any evolutionary process. God created spirit beings in the heavens called angels. He created physical objects throughout space. But man is the only one of God’s creations that possesses both a spirit and a body. Life is present in many other forms of God’s creation such as plants and the animal kingdom, but the life in man is a result of the very breath of God Himself. This truly makes us unique—a one of a kind creature. We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made!
