Foster Neighborhood Crime Watch
Foster Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015 at the Foster Community Center. Speakers for this month will be Boone County Sheriff Randall White and Assistant Administrator to the Boone County Commission, Pam White.

VFW looking for veterans
The Daniel Boone VFW and Aux are looking for Veterans that have served our country. We would like to make a history book about our Veterans. Questions like Name, Branch of Service, Rank, Where you Served, and When you served.
Other memories that you might want to share about your time in the service and what advice for us.

Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen Essay contest
The Voice of Democracy is a written and audio contest open to students in grade 9-12. This contest is a 3 to 5 minute audio/written contest. The top scholarship being $30,000. Essays with forms and audio are due November 1st 2015.

The Patriot’s Pen is a 300-400 type written essay. Forms are available to students in grades 6-8.

You will be judged on imagination and human interest. express clearly your ideas in an organized manner. Speak in a clear credible manner. All forms are available in all schools.

Appalachian Council Head Start/Pre-K
The Appalachian Council Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Children must be 3 or 4 by Sept. 1, 2015.
Services are available for children with disabilities or special needs. There is no fee required for entrance into Head Start.
Information needed to apply: Verification of income for a 12 month period, birth certificate from vital statistics, and an immunization record.

The Daniel Boone VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary are looking for families, in Boone Co, that have loved ones in the recent conflicts. We know that there is one. Just wanted to find out if there are more that we don’t know about. They are called Gold Star families.

Senior Famers Market vouchers
The Boone County Community Organization located at 347 Kenmore Drive, Lick Creek Road in Danville is currently giving out the Senior Farmers Market Vegetable and Fruit Vouchers to the Senior Citizens of Boone County.
Vouchers will be given daily from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m., until the supply is gone. Vouchers will be given to Boone County Seniors 60 and over and only one per household.

Boone County Republican meeting
The Boone County Republican Executive Committee will meet on Monday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m. at Park Avenue Restaurant in Danville for the purpose of reorganization and the recuitment of candidates to be placed on the ballot for next year’s May Primary Election.
All registered Republicans and Independents are welcome to attend this meeting.
Fall master gardener’s class
A fall master gardener’s class is scheduled at the old “Foster Grade School” at 455 Foster Road, Foster, WV 25081, starting Monday, Sept. 14, 2015.

Early bird registration deadline is Monday, Aug. 17, 2015.
The cost is $75 total, inclusive of Master Gardener Manual if registered by Aug. 17, 2015. After that date the cost is $100.
Participants will learn various aspects of gardening, a bit about plant biology, pest management, best practices, plant propagation, landscaping, and much, much, more!
This is a ten week course. Classes are offered once a week for three hours on various topics like Botany, Soils and Fertilizer, and Trees and Fruits, among others. You must attend at least seven of the ten classes. At the end of the class there is a test covering the material presented. Upon passage you become a Certified Master Gardener. The first year you must complete 30 hours of volunteer work. After that, there is a requirement of 6 hours of volunteer work and six hours of continuing education.
Benefits of taking the class include lots of practical information, you become a member of the Boone County Master Gardener’s Club, many friendships, and lots of fun.
