LOGAN — On Sept. 10, 2015, The Logan Banner reported Andréa Santos, Spanish instructor at Logan High School had been named the 2016 West Virginia Teacher of the Year.
Santos is a veteran educator with more than two decades of experience under her belt.
During an address to the Logan County Board of Education, Santos explained, “I am here today because a remnant of southern West Virginia teachers taught me with passion and electricity, so much so, that I forgot I was in a classroom, but rather, I was absorbed in a whirling tornado of learning and mystery-solving. These teachers gave me, not only an education, but a full cup of self-worth and dignity as well. Today, they remain my teacher role models. Thank you Eunice Batchel, Renata Comoretta, and Bill Chafin.”
Santos was honored on Thursday, Jan. 14, by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and superintendent of state schools Michael Martirano with a gift $5,000 and the use of a new car for one year.
During an interview with the Logan Banner, Santos explained she was given a 2016 Toyota Camry to drive for the year and High Mark Blue Cross/Blue Shield awarded her with a $5,000 check.
Part of Santos’ duties as WV Teacher of the Year will include acting as a spokesperson for W.Va. education and attending and speaking at myriad educational events.
Santos noted, she will soon be attending The National Teachers of the Year Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas. She will also have the opportunity to attend International Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.
In April, all 53 state teachers (including the District of Columbia, American Samoa and Guam) will reportedly be honored for a week at the White House with the president.
Santos noted, “Being named WV Teacher of the Year provides the the spotlight to highlight Appalachian teachers for the hardworking, dedicated educators that they have always been and to let the rest of the country know that West Virginian young people are smart, clever and full of dreams.”
