2015 Boone County Belle winner Sylvia Iris Meadows was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire England on December 6, 1925.
She received her education from the Parish Church of St. Mary. Soon after her graduation from the Parish Church of St. Mary, Sylvia met American G.I., Harry Leon Meadows.
Harry Meadows was stationed in Sylvia’s hometown of Marlborough during World War II. The two immediately fell in love during one of the most tragic times in World History and began a romance that would survive this horrific time.
During the trials and tribulations of a World War, including the bombing of Sylvia’s hometown, this romance gained strength daily which would lead up to the two being united in marriage prior to the conclusion of World War II.
At the conclusion of World War II, Harry Meadows was ordered to return to the United States by the United States Army.
Prior to his departure from England, Harry and Sylvia agreed that she would travel to the United States by crossing the Atlantic on the Steam Vessel, Queen Mary.
Once arriving to the United States, Sylvia Meadows was united with her husband, Harry Meadows, and began living their lives as husband and wife in the Madison area of Boone County West Virginia.
On December 16, 1949, Sylvia became a United States Citizen by receiving her Certificate of Naturalization from the Unites States Government.
Throughout her life, Sylvia has been a homemaker and involved in many community related organizations, including but not limited to; Founder of the Boone County Red Hatters Association, Very active in the Girl Scouts of America, Hosted parties for all World War II Brides in the Boone County Area and was a spokesperson for all other World War II brides that had traveled from England. She was also an Avon representative.
Her hobbies included; singing, dancing, playing the piano, gardening, theatre, and sewing. Sylvia was so gifted at sewing that she made her own garments. Due to circumstances beyond her control, Sylvia is now residing at Hillcrest Healthcare in Danville WV.
It is my belief that due to the trials and tribulations of the life of Sylvia Meadows, she would be an outstanding choice and would represent the citizens of Boone County and the title of the Boone County Belle by sharing and displaying her charming and charismatic personality, and her love for life.
