FOSTER, W.Va – The Boone County Board of Education met Monday, October 17 for a regular session meeting.

The room was packed with parents, teachers and community members along with several media outlets.

Many things were discussed as the board tried to make informed decisions about the future of Boone County Schools.

According to Board President Mark Sumpter, Whitesville Elementary has been recommended for closure.

According to Penny Green, Executive Secretary Boone County Schools, documents on Whitesville Elementary closure recommendation are located at Whitesville Elementary, Sherman Elementary, Sherman Junior High and the Central office in Madison.

Freddie Harless, Mayor of Whitesville said, “Keep an open mind and do the right thing for the children.”

A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 15 at Whitesville Elementary School on the matter of Whitesville Elementary closure and consolidation with Sherman Elementary School. Alternate public hearing date is November 17.

Superintendent Jeff Huffman and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lisa Beck visited Van High School Tuesday, October 18 the day after the board meeting and announced their recommendation for Van area schools.

According to Vice Principal Matt Stollings, the recommendation will be for Van High School students grades nine through 12 to go to Scott High School and for Van Junior Senior High School to become a Pre-K through eighth grade school.

Stollings said, “The decision is based upon decline of student enrollment county wide, decline in tax collection dollars, and staff over formula.”

Two different public hearings will be held in the matter of the Van area school recommendations.

On Tuesday, November 29 at 6 p.m. a special meeting will be held at Van Elementary to conduct a public hearing on the possible closure of Van Elementary and consolidation of students Pre-K through eighth grades. Alternate date of public hearing is November 30.

A second public hearing will be held a Van Junior-Senior High School Thursday, December 1 at 6 p.m. to discuss the closure recommendation of Van Junior-Senior High School and the consolidation with Scott High School. Alternate public hearing date is December 6.

Final decisions will be voted on at a later date during a board meeting.
