MADISON, W.Va – The Boone County Commission was awarded the Land and Water Conservation Grant in the amount of $60,000 at their regular session meeting Tuesday, November 1.
Jenna Jeffrey, a regional representative from Governor Earl Ray Tomblin’s office was there to present the grant to the commission.
According to the letter addressed to Commissioner Eddie Hendricks from the governor’s office the grant will allow the Boone County Commission to build a new outdoor stage and make minor ADA improvements to the Waterways Park in Julian, W.Va.
Jeffrey read comments from Governor Tomblin before she finished presenting the grant to the commission.
Governor Tomblin said, “West Virginia is known for its natural beauty and abundance of outdoor recreational activities … for both residents and visitors to our state.”
“Today’s presentations are the start of many anticipated projects in cities and towns across West Virginia,” said Tomblin. “Projects like these are investments in our state and our people.”
Russell Thomas, Director of Parks and Recreation as well as Melissa Legg, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation were in attendance for the presentation of this grant.
Kris Mitchell, Director of the Boone County Community and Economic Development Corporation (BCCEDC) also attended Tuesday’s meeting. She wrote the grant on behalf of the Boone County Commission.
According to Mitchell, the seating is already complete for the outdoor stage area.
The Boone County Commission Maintenance Department will be building the outdoor stage
Pam White the Boone County Commission Administrator said the maintenance department is currently working on bathrooms at the Lick Creek ballfield.
“We have a wonderful maintenance department,” said White.
White said the project could possibly begin in the spring and would depend on the weather.
The Boone County Commission will have its next meeting Tuesday, November 15 at 10 a.m. The meetings are open to the public.
