FOSTER, W.Va – The Boone County Board of Education had a special work session meeting Monday, November 14 at 5 p.m.

However, many decisions were made at this meeting.

The Board of Education has chosen to keep Whitesville Elementary School, Van Jr Sr High School and Van Elementary School open for another year.

However, “should the current trend in the local economy continue, we will have to consider all options which are available to reduce expenses. While this could conceivably include the consideration of school closures, such would not be a certainty,” said Boone County School Superintendent Jeff Huffman.

“As I have shared with many people during the course of the past weeks and months, there is no one who likes the idea of closing schools,” said Huffman. “The topic is a very emotionally charged topic regardless of the community or school district.”

Huffman said, “There is little or no doubt that there will have to be reductions in various areas for the 2017-18 school year.”

“Currently, the revenue received through the regular and excess levies during the current fiscal year is behind the revenue received during the same time period last year which causes concern,” Huffman said.

“At the present time, it is too early to fully develop an operating budget for the 2017-18 school year which would reflect the areas where cuts would be made. We will thoroughly review every area of the budget and projected expenditures,” said Huffman.

In light of the recent resignation of board president Mark Sumpter in late October the board also nominated to fill the empty board seat at this meeting.

The newest board member is Rodney Smith.

Penny Green Executive Secretary of the Boone County Board of Education said, “Mr. Smith was the Principal/Director of Vocational Education at the Boone Career and Technical Center. His effective date of retirement was September 30, 2003.”

Green said Smith took his oath of office on Tuesday, November 15.

In addition to Smith being nominated into office Joe S. Tagliente, Jr was nominated and took his ceremonial oath of office as Board of Education President Monday, November 7.

The next board meeting will be Monday, November 28 at 6 p.m. at the Operations Complex in Foster, W.Va.
