FOSTER, W.Va – At the recent Board of Education (BOE) meeting the board approved the 2017-2018 school calendar. There were two different drafts and the traditional calendar, draft one was chosen.

However, the biggest topic of discussion for the BOE on Tuesday, April 18 was the replacement to fill the unexpired term of BOE member Danny Cantley.

According to Superintendent Jeff Huffman, Cantley resigned his seat as a BOE member effective April 5.

Huffman said, “Obviously, I cannot speak for Mr. Cantley, but he did note that he was unable to fulfill his obligations as a board member due to personal health concerns as well as family health concerns.”

Cantley had been a board member for approximately 24 years.

“…the board shall appoint a replacement to fill the vacant board seat within forty-five days of the resignation or the State Superintendent of Schools shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy,” said Huffman.

The deadline for letters of interest or resumes is Friday, April 28 to the central office in Madison.

Copies will then be made of each interested person and passed out at the Monday, May 1 board meeting so as to give the current BOE members time to look over the potential applicants.

“I would think it would be unlikely that it would make a selection that evening, but it is possible,” said Huffman. “The board could also elect to make an appointment at the meeting on May 15 or call a special meeting to take such action.”

For the incoming BOE member they will have to be from the Sherman or Scott district as to have all areas of the county represented on the board.

Upcoming regular session BOE meetings are scheduled for…

Monday, May 1 at 6 p.m. in the Operations Complex Conference Room at Foster, W.Va
