Over 1,000 employees in the coal industry received “WARN” notices from Patriot Coal, it has been reported.
WARN letters are intended to alert workers of plant closings and mass layoffs two months before the actions occur.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper says he received confirmation of the pending lay offs on Tuesday morning, Oct. 6.
“The loss of jobs total 1,056 West Virginian’s out of work,” Carper said in a press release. “This news is very disheartening for the mining communities in West Virginia.
Most of the lay offs are in the Eskdale and Dawes area of Cabin Creek in Kanawha County.
The mines impacted are Little Creek Dock in Charleston — 6; Remington, LLC in Eskdale — 118l; Wildcat Energy in Eskdale — 241; Wildcat Energy in Eskdale — 47; Speed Mining, LLC in Dawes— 483; and Midland Trail Energy in Tad — 161.
