DANVILLE — An insurance liability issue has caused the Boone County Commission to shut down the Boone County Fair, according to officials.

“The Boone County Fair Board failed to obtain liability insurance for the fair in time, so without the event be insured the county was facing a potentially horrible liability situation,” said Boone County Commission Mickey Brown.

Brown said the county must put the safety and financial liability of the county and its residents as top priority.

“We are sorry, but we have to think of safety first,” Brown explained. “We could not put the county into a potential lawsuit or liability situation if something happened at the fair.”

There was no comment from any member of the fair board.

Brown said the money the commission gives the fair would most likely be used to pay the guaranteed contracts the fair board has made with the carnival and entertainment acts.

“I don’t see any reason the fair won’t be back next year, but they must get their liability insurance paperwork filed prior to the fair beginning,” Brown said.
