There will be a USO-themed dance on Saturday, March 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Danville Community Center. Admission is free for community members but attendees are encouraged to bring donations for care packages that will be sent to deployed members of the 130th Air National Guard.
The dance is co-hosted by the Madison-Danville Jaycees and VFW Post 5587 and will feature 1940’s-era music by the Southern WV Community Band. Military uniforms and themed clothing are encouraged.

The Madison-Danville Jaycees are having their 2nd Annual Dance for a Cure Zumbathon on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Madison Civic Center.

The Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Daniel Boone V.F.W. Post 5578 will be having a hot dog sale on Friday, March 7, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Madison Fire House. Lunch includes two hot dogs, potato salad, chips, dessert and a drink for $6. Individual hot dogs are $1.25.

2014 Photo Fund Drive
There will be a 2014 Photo Fund Drive at the Racine Volunteer Fire Department on Sundays, March 9 and 16, from noon to 5 p.m.
Proceeds will be going towards updating rescue and firefighting equipment.

Boone County Democrat Executive Committee Meeting
The Boone County Democrat Executive Committee meeting will be on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 5 p.m.
The meeting place will be in the annex of the Boone County Courthouse. Chairperson Sue Ann Zickefoose asks for all members to be present. The agenda will be choosing poll workers for the May Primary Election.
Also, plans for the “Meet Your Candidate” event scheduled for sometime in March 2014 will be discussed.

Western Regional CASA reaches Boone, Kanawha, Lincoln, Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a non-profit organization that desires for every child in an abuse/neglect case to have a permanent, safe home. Additionally, our agency recruits child care providers, conducts regular training workshops for child care professionals, and provides technical assistance such as behavior consultations and the Traveling Resource and Information Library Systems (TRAILS).
Licensed environmental remediation specialist exam set
The state Department of Environmental Protection is announcing the next examination for licensed remediation specialist certification is scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on March 26, at the Marshall University Graduate College in South Charleston. The exam will be given in Room 205 of the Robert C. Byrd Academic Center Building, 100 Angus E. Peyton Dr., South Charleston.
Certification is required for anyone submitting voluntary remediation and brownfields cleanup designs to the agency’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) for review. To qualify for the exam, you must have a bachelor’s degree in an approved scientific field and at least six years of relevant professional experience. You can also qualify with a high school diploma and 10 years of relevant professional experience. In either case, you must have at least one year of supervisory or project management experience.

Freedom of Speech Contest
Creative students could win as much as $500 for developing a video about the U.S. Constitution as part of a video contest sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia State Bar.
Participants are asked to create a 3-minute video with the theme “We the People: Freedom of Speech.” The contest is open to West Virginia residents in grades 6 – 12. Entries will be divided by middle school and high school. First place in each category receives $500, while second place wins $250. The creators of the first place videos also will be invited to attend the West Virginia State Bar’s annual meeting on May 9 at the Sheraton Four Points in Charleston.
Videos will be judged based on originality, creativity, adherence to the theme and overall quality. Entries must include parental permission for those under the age of 18. Students interested in entering the contest can fill out an application as well as read the rules at http://wvde.state.wv.us/wvstatebar. Submissions for 2014 will be accepted until April 4.
