Boone County WVU Alumni & Friends annual pig roast and golf outing
The 27th annual Boone County WVU Alumni & Friends annual pig roast and golf outing is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Riverview Country Club in Madison.
Golf will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the pig roast will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. There will be entertainment, door prizes and a live auction. You do not have to be a graduate of WVU to attend. Every Boone County full time student registered for the fall semester at WVU who attends the pig roast will receive a $50 book scholarship at The Book Exchange.
All net proceeds from the annual event go the the Boone County WVU Alumni & Friends Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are awarded to Boone County students attending WVU. Donations are tax deductible.

Ashford-Nellis Neighborhood Watch
The Ashford-Nellis Neighborhood Watch meeting will be Tuesday, July 29, at 6 p.m., at the Nellis Archives.
The Boone Co. Assn. of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) will Wed., July 16, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Park Ave. Restaurant.
The new retirees of Boone County will be recognized as our special guest. Tom Bias, our new president, encourages all members to attend this special meeting that starts our new year.
Our 2014 Scholarship Girl, Maggie Hager, has been invited to be with us. Door prizes will be given away and 50/50 will be offered to those who choose to play. Fun, food, fellowship and information are on the menu for the day.
Boone County 4-H Camp
Boone County 4-H Camp will be held July 20-25 at the Mason County 4-H Camp in Southside, WV.
Camp is open to all county youth ages 9 or finished 3rd grade to 21, and no prior experience in 4-H is required before attending.
The cost for camp is $50 for full price and $20 for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch, and scholarships are available for those with financial need. Transportation to camp is also provided.

2014 Photo Fund Drive
The Danville Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a 2014 photo fund drive on Sunday, July 27, from noon until 5 p.m. with all proceeds going towards rescue and firefighting equipment.
Portraits will be taken at the Danville Fire Station. No appointment is needed and walk-ins are always welcome.
Appalachian Council Head Start/Pre K
Appalachian Council Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year.
Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2014.
Services are available for children with disabilities for entrance into Head Start.
Information needed to apply includes verification of income for a 12 month period, birth certificate from vital statistics and an immunization record.
Head Start and Pre K locations include Brookview Elementary, Danville Head Start, Nellis Elementary, Prenter Head Start, Racine Head Start, Ramage Elementary, Wharton Elementary and Whitesville Elementary.

State to honor Adopt-A-Highway volunteers
The West Virginia departments of Environmental Protection and Transportation will host the 18th annual Adopt-A-Highway Volunteer Appreciation Day Picnic beginning at 9 a.m. on Aug. 2 at Snowshoe Resort in Pocahontas County.
The picnic is organized each year to recognize the thousands of Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) volunteers who pick up litter along West Virginia’s roadways. AAH volunteers remove over 4 million pounds of trash from state highways each year. They recycle about 10,000 pounds of glass, 5,000 pounds of plastic and 8,000 pounds of aluminum annually. Currently, more than 40,000 volunteers representing in excess of 1,400 organizations keep more than 3,300 miles of West Virginia roads litter free.
Festivities on Aug. 2 will include bingo, basket weaving, a cakewalk, children’s games and other activities. Volunteers will be served lunch, catered by Snowshoe, at noon. Afternoon activities will include presentation of the annual AAH Awards and the announcement of the AAH Volunteer of the Year. Ten-, 15- and 20-year volunteers will receive lapel pins for years of service and special AAH safety vests imprinted with the number of years they have volunteered.

The Mingo County Commission (MCC) is planning a double elimination girls basketball tournament at the former Williamson High School Gym Aug 1-3, and all proceeds will go to Crossroads Recovery. The MCC is also holding a 3 on 3 tourney for boys and girls on July 25-26. Age groups 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-18 and 18-years and up. The fee is $75 per team. You can also contact Wilkerson for this tourney. All proceeds will go to the Harry L. Joyce Center.
