The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is investigating a suspected chemical release at Diversified Services in St. Albans. Diversified Services is a chemical-hauling trucking company and transports MCHM for Freedom Industries.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which is conducting a separate investigation of Diversified Se…rvices, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, informed the WVDEP today of a sheen in a drainage system near Diversified Services’ St. Albans’ headquarters. That drainage system empties into a tributary of the Kanawha River. WVDEP inspectors are on the scene taking samples to determine the composition of the material released.

It is not known how much material got into the drainage system or the exact cause and timeframe of the release. There are no public water intakes immediately downstream of the site. The nearest surface water public intake is in Huntington. The city of St. Albans’ public water intake is in the Coal River.

Diversified Services has been instructed to implement or install containment measures in the drainage system.
