GRIFFITHSVILLE — The Van Middle School football team opened the 2013 season with a 27-0 victory over Duval at Griffithsville, Lincoln County.
The Bulldog offense was led by running backs Brady Grant and Drew Price, who combined for 316 yards rushing and all four Bulldog touchdowns. Grant rushed for 178 yards and scored three touchdowns on just six carries while Price picked up 138 yards on eight carries, including a 74-yard touchdown run.
Van’s coaching staff praised the play of Gavin Smith at quarterback, replacing injured starter Taylor Jarrell.
“Gavin managed the game well and showed a lot of poise in the pocket, often under heavy pressure. He completed two key first downs during the game both leading to scores,” said Head Coach Ron Deal.
The Bulldog defense was led by Daniel Gibson with three passes defended, one interception and six solo tackles. D.J. Jarrell led the Dogs with 11 tackles, followed by Grant with 10, Price with eight and Tanner Bowling with seven tackles. Van will travel to Man this Thursday evening for another contest.
