VAN — The Van boys basketball team stretched its 2013-14 season record to 2-0 with a 37-35 win over Montcalm, December 17.
The victory, coupled with an opening season win over Regional Christian, propelled the Bulldogs as the team prepares to take a brief holiday break.
The Bulldogs played away at Liberty (Harrison) but details of that game were not available at press time. That contest was scheduled for Saturday, December 21.
Van jumped out to a 12-6 first quarter lead and led, 19-11, at the half. The teams traded seven points apiece in the third quarter, leaving Van on top, 26-18. But it was a torrid comeback for Montcalm in the final canto, 17-11, to cut the margin to two.
Cole Price and Logan Crouse led the Dogs, with ten points each. Senior leader Brandon Elswick added nine for the offense. Tyler Honeycutt contributed four; and Eddie Yeager and Keith Blevins added two apiece for Van.
Elswick connected on two treys for the Dogs.
Goins led Montcalm, with eight points.
After the Liberty game, Van is scheduled to return to action Friday, December 27, at Summersville to take on Nicholas County. The following day they meet Nicholas’ cousin, Richwood, in the Cherry River town.
Then, the Dogs do not return to action until January 4 when Mount View visits Van.
