No. 1 Westside survived Scott’s fourth quarter rally in a battle of AA top five teams.
The Lady Renegades saw a 12-point lead whittled to four, but they hung on to beat the No. 4 Skyhawks, 49-44, last Tuesday night at Clear Fork.
“It was what we expected from a team coming in as the No. 4 team in the state,” said Westside coach Jamie Lusk. “It was tough.”
The Lady Renegades used a 9-1 spurt late in the third and early in the fourth to open up a 37-25 lead.
Scott (8-1) answered with an 8-2 burst, capped by Jamiee Dotson’s three from the left corner, to get within 39-33 with five minutes to play.
WHS senior guard Faith Davis answered with a three of her own a free throw to push the lead back to 43-33.
The Skyhawks had a string of seven straight points, including a bucket and a foul shot from Andrea Rankin, to narrow the lead to 45-40.
Julie Conway’s foul shot with 56 ticks left pulled Scott within 47-43.
Scott got the ball back, but Westside’s Danielle Brown came up with a steal and took it in for two to seal the win.
WHS played much of the game without all-state post player Hope Lester, who was in foul trouble early.
“Hope is very aggressive on defense and there are going to be times when she gets in foul trouble,” Lusk commented.
Kristin Hash came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 10 rebounds.
The contest was close through the first half. The Renegades had a two-point lead, 24-22, at the break.
A strong defensive effort in the third quarter proved pivotal as WHS held the Skyhawks to three points and gained a little separation from the visitors.
“These girls take pride in their defense,” said Lusk.
Faith Davis had 15 points for WHS. Hash (10), Lester (10) and Brown followed.
Rankin had 13 to lead Scott. Dotson and Maddie Weeks added nine each.
The Lady Skyhawks beat Poca on Monday night by two points.
