Commission awarded grant for security equipment for family court in new annex

MADISON – Two major grants were awarded to the Boone County Commission totaling $73,400, according to county officials.

“Both grants went into effect, July 1, 2012, at the start of the 2012-2013 Fiscal Year,” said County Commission President Mickey Brown.

Brown said the West Virginia Division of Justice and Community Services awarded $47,900 to the commission to install security equipment in the new Family Court facility in the new courthouse annex that is currently under construction. It will also provide $25,500 for the full-time salary of the Boone County Victim Services (VOCA) coordinator.

“The court security grant will provide funds to purchase closed circuit monitoring equipment, exterior and interior cameras, access control for court officials, as well as video processors, network services and video displays,” said County Administrator James A. Gore.

“The goal of this project is to install new surveillance equipment and controlled access for the Family Court Judge Cynthia Jarrell, her staff and other court personnel as we continue the commission’s commitment of protecting court officials and the public by providing the latest security equipment and technology in our court facilities,” added Commissioner Eddie Hendricks.

The VOCA coordinator, Christina Engles, works out of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and provides direct services to crime victims and their families in Boone County, according to Boone County Prosecuting Attorney D. Keith Randolph.

Randolph says the program has shown positive results and provides a service that is much needed in Boone County.

“Without a victim services coordinator, many crime victims would be without essential services and much needed counseling,” he said.
