Boone Memorial Hospital shares ‘Emergency Disaster’ plan
by Karlie Belle Price FOR THE COAL VALLEY NEWS
MADISON -- Hospital Directors and Administrators met at Boone Memorial Hospital last week to ensure the hospital is ready if and when a disaster would strike this week. The hospital has an established Emergency Plan in effect make sure patients and employees are prepared. Teresa Meade, RN BSN the Chief Clinical Officer/Executive Director of Support Services shared the hospitals plan. “As of now we have advised all of our employees to make sure their vehicles are full of fuel. We reminded them that if transportation to and from work is needed we can arrange transportation on a case by case basis. We want to do what we can to make sure we have enough staffing at the hospital. Our Central Supply Department has towels, wash cloths and soap available in the locker rooms for staff to bathe. We also have a list of employees who have volunteered to work in the case of an emergency to make sure we have enough medical personnel to see patients. Our Maintenance Department has placed blades on our trucks to plow snow if needed and our medical records/electronics are on a generator back-up.” Meade explained that during a storm one of the biggest concerns for community members is lack of power-especially for those who are on oxygen. “It’s very scary for individuals who need oxygen to stay alive. Luckily, if the power goes out there are 5 shelters that have been put in place by the local EMS Center where generator back-ups will be available,” said Meade. “Of course if a patient is sick we encourage them to come to BMH, however, these shelters are in place for those who lose power or need oxygen supply. EMS is encouraging these individuals to first call 911 in case of emergency. 5 Boone County Shelters: Wharton/Barrett Fire Department; Lick Creek Community Center; Morrisvale Community Center; Racine Fire Department; and Orgas Community Center. If needed for "overflow" and the above areas get filled up, the schools may also be used. Although no medical personnel will be on-site at these locations, they will provide electric, food, water and shelter if a disaster hits. For more information about the above shelters please contact 304-369-7273. For more information about the hospital call Boone Memorial at 304-369-1230 or visit us on-line at www.bmh.org
