WILLIAMSON — The newest addition to Lyrick Talent Group Inc.’s growing roster fancies herself in the world of classic country.

“I’ve always said that I’m going to bring country back,” Kayla Slone, 20, of Matewan, said with a laugh.

Kayla, who has been signing since she was a mere 3-years-old in church, is the seventh artist added to John Carlin’s, cast of musicians. Carlin is the president of Lyrick Talent Group Inc.

A junior in nursing at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, Kayla said that her husband, David, his family, her family and her friends have all been very supportive of her endeavors in the world of music.

When asked who she might liken herself to, she said there was no one else like her.

“I’m unique,” Kayla said. “I don’t try to sound like anyone else. But I sing in the style of Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette.”

Confidence is definitely something that she is not lacking in, but it didn’t cross over that fine line into arrogance.

“I told my husband that I feel like I’m beginning my walk to fame,” she said. “I have all these people behind me now, supporting me.”

She said that she wasn’t pursuing a musical career for the money or the fame however, but simply for the love of it.

“God gave me this talent,” Kayla said. “I should share it with the world.”

She said that she does write her own material, but so far has only shared it with her husband, who works in the mines.

“I told him once that I guess he’s Doolittle and I’m Loretta,” she said, laughing.

She shared a story with the Daily News of a trip that she and her nursing group took to Nashville, Tenn., one year, staying at the Opryland Hotel.

“There was this woman playing music for entertainment in the hotel lobby, and my friends encouraged to me get up there and sing alongside her,” Kayla said. “So I did. There were a ton of people listening to me and people were trying to throw money onto the piano.

“It felt awesome.”

Within one year, she foresees herself at the Grand Ole Opry, “or at least back in Nashville.”

And within five years, she said that she hopes to have an album out by then.

While dreams are good to have, her focus is on the now, as she will be accompanying the rest of Carlin’s artists to an autism benefit concert which also acts as an audition for “American Idol,” and “America’s Got Talent.”

“When I got that phone call, I start crying,” Kayla said. “I though, ‘Hey, this might be my break.’”

She said the fact that Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., a Logan County native, was able to win the most recent season of “America’s Got Talent,” gave her hope for herself.

“I’m going to go and give it my all.”
