Boone County Clerk’s office begins wide-reaching effort to update voter rolls
by FRED PACE, EDITOR
MADISON – Boone County Clerk Gary Williams says maintaining a clean voter registration database has always been the goal of his office. “This is not only a problem in Boone County, but across the state and nationwide,” he said. Williams’ office is now beginning a wide-reaching effort to update the county’s voter rolls. “Some voters in Boone County can expect to receive a special card in the mail from their county clerk’s office,” he explained. “It will be asking them to verify their address and help us to maintain a clean voter registration database.” Beginning this week, the county clerk’s office will be mailing address confirmation cards to verify residential address information for those voters who appear to have inaccurate or incomplete addresses on file with the county clerk’s office, Williams said. “A notice will be sent by first class mail and will include a prepaid, preaddressed return form on which the voter can verify or change the residential address information as listed in the county clerk’s office,” he said. Williams encourages voters to return this card if they have moved from the address listed on the card or have received a 911 address change notice from the U.S. Postal Service, so that their voter registration information can be appropriately updated. “This process will also help eliminate ambiguity with voters who have a mailing address listed as ‘general delivery’ or only list a post office box,” he added. “As the General Election in November approaches, it is imperative to have accurate voter registration information,” said Williams. “The county clerk’s office see this as an opportunity to reach out to the voters of Boone County and ask for their assistance in this process, so that every eligible voter has the right to vote in the presidential election in November.” If a voter does not receive a notice, but believes they need to change their current residential or mailing address, they are asked to contact the Boone County Clerk’s Office at 304-369-7300 or visit the office in the Boone County Courthouse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993 prohibits the removal of a voter from the registration rolls for failure to vote. The voter must be given the opportunity to respond to an address confirmation notice before the process for removal can begin. “Failure to respond to an address confirmation notice will place a voter on the inactive voters list,” Williams said.
