(TNS) MADISON — Scott controlled the clock and the game in its 54-15 rout of Poca Friday night.
The Skyhawks ran 45 total plays in the first half to just 11 for Poca and outgained the Dots 377-92 – with 319 yards on the ground – to take a 36-7 at the break.
Scott quarterback Austin Mitchell led the offensive attack, rushing for 101 yards on just eight carries in the first half and two touchdowns, and he also threw a TD pass. That’s what the senior finished with after playing sparingly in the second half.
Skyhawks coach Shane Griffith was happy to see his team with the ball so much, and be able to do something with it.
‘Time of possession is something we have talked about all season,’ Griffith said. ‘Unfortunately for a young team we have had turnovers, penalties and been behind the chains. Tonight we didn’t even allow those things to happen.’
The Skyhawks spread the wealth, having a lot more bodies than Poca, rushing seven different players in the first half to just two for Poca (0-5), with three scoring touchdowns.
In all, six different running backs had touchdowns for Scott as the Skyhawks outgained the Dots 548-228 and ran 65 plays to Poca’s 35. Garrett Roberts finished with 131 yards on 10 carries for the Skyhawks (2-3).
‘Tonight was about gaining some confidence and lighting a spark,’ Griffith said. ‘We haven’t had a lot of good happen for us. This is one of those moments with a young team you try and build off of it. It was great to see our offense start to work again collectively.’
Scott took the opening possession of the game and marched 65 yards on six plays. The scoring drive was capped by a Mitchell 28-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game to give the Skyhawks a quick 8-0 lead after a successful 2-point conversion run.
Poca fumbled on its first offensive play and Scott cashed in with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Alan Johnson and another successful 2-point conversion run gave the Skyhawks a 16-0 lead after one quarter.
Scott scored again early in the second quarter on another Mitchell touchdown run from 30 yards out for a 22-0 lead with 10:15 left.
After only getting 3 yards of total offense in the first quarter on just five plays, Poca got on the board when senior running Brett Watts scampered 80 yards for a touchdown.
The Skyhawks finished out the half by scoring two more touchdowns on the ground, one from Tanner Price from 17 yards and the other coming on Roberts’ 2-yard plunge for the 36-7 lead.
All the second-half scoring came in the third quarter with Tanner Halstead, Raistlin Walker and Wes Nelson rushing for Scott touchdowns. Poca scored on a 25-yard pass from Kaden Meeks to Matthew Gibson.
Watts finished with 112 yards rushing on 11 carries to lead the Dots offense. Poca coach Seth Ramsey said the team just needs to be on the field longer with his explosive senior a chance to produce.
‘It’s been the same story and script all year,’ Ramsey said. ‘We have to take better care of the football. Brett gives us some big-play capability but we have to get him the ball more and be on the field more.’
Scott’s next game is homecoming at Skyhawks Field on Friday, Oct. 2, starting at 7:30 p.m. against Class AA Westside High School.
