MADISON — A defensive battle controlled the first half, while offense dominated the second half of a 38-28 loss for the Scott Skyhawks on homecoming night in Madison.
Friday night’s loss to the Westside Renegades (3-2) dropped the Skyhawks record to 2-4 after six games.
“We just had too many turnovers and too many mistakes offensively in the first half,” said Scott Skyhawks’ head coach Shane Griffith. “This is were the inexperience and youth of our team shows and we will see if they can handle this type of situation in the second half.”
At halftime, senior Cody “Flash” Jarrell was named homecoming king and senior Lauren Ball was named homecoming queen.

The only scoring for the Skyhawks in the first half came from the defense. With 3:28 left on the first half clock, Codie Loftus picked off a Westside pass and took it 77 yards for a touchdown. Loftus. The 2-point conversion pass by Austin Mitchell to Tanner Halstead was good and the halftime score was Westside 22 and Scott 8.
Jacob Bratcher led a tough Skyhawks defense that continued to play well in the second half.
Late in the third quarter, Austin Mitchell found Loftus for a 14-yard touchdown to pull Scott with six at 22-16, the closest the score had been since early in the second.
Scott attempted an onsides kick that failed. Two additional penalities on the play gave Westside the ball deep in Scott territory. The Renegades were able to score on a Trevor Anderson run for 5 yards. The 2-point conversion run by Larry Cook was good and Westside was up 30-16 with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Scott made its push to win the game in the fourth quarter. With 11:51 on the clock in the final quarter, Skyhawks quarterback Austin Mitchell ran a bootleg play for a 10-yard touchdown. The point after kick failed and the score was 30-22 in favor of Westside.
The with 9:16 left in the game, Mitchell threw a perfect pass to Alan “The Julian Jet” Johnson that went 71-yards for a touchdown. The two point pass from Mitchell to Nathan Ramsey failed and Scott was only down by two points with lots of time left on the clock.
However, the Renegades returned the next kickoff inside the Scott 40, then Cook scampered in from six yards out and found Morgan for the conversion to go ahead by 10 points and put the game out of reach.
Mitchell led Scott on the ground with 98 yards on 17 carries and in the air with over 100 passing yards and a touchdown.
Josh Morgan led the Renegade offensive attack with 120 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown, and Larry Cook, Jr. added 89 yards and three scores on the ground.
The Scott Skyhawks go on the road and travel to Cardinal Conference rival Wayne High School on Friday, Oct. 9. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
