As they prepared to enter post-season play last week, the Scott boys basketball team ended the regular season with a low-scoring victory over Cardinal Conference rival Poca.
It was senior night at Scott High as the Hawks held Poca to just two points in the final quarter on their way to a 39-35 win. The victory, coupled with Chapmanville Regional High’s earlier upset victory over Poca, jumbled the Region IV, Section 2 tournament line-up for this week.
In fact, Scott had originally looked to play yesterday (Tuesday, February 26) as the season wound down but that shifted with the CRHS win over Tolsia.
In the new state of affairs, Chapmanville ended the year ranked number four in the section and defeated fifth place Wayne in the tourney’s first round the past Saturday evening at the Logan Fieldhouse.
Now the Tigers will once again take on Tolsia, this time in the tournament’s second round at 6 pm Thursday, February 28. Scott, ranked second in the section, takes on number three Mingo Central in the second game that evening with tip-off set at about 8 pm. All sectional tourney games are played at Logan.
The sectional championship game in the single-elimination tournament is set for 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 2.
Meanwhile, points were hard to come by last Tuesday as Scott took the defense-oriented game at Madison. Poca came into the game sporting a 15-4 record while Scott was ranked tenth in Class AA with a 12-9 mark.
It was senior night in the gymnasium dubbed the “Hawks Nest” as the two conference rivals were set for battle.
Scott took the opening tip but was unable to score. With 7:16 twinkling on the first quarter scoreboard, Noah Frampton put Poca up with a three-point goal. Anthony Sigmon then got the Hawks on the board with two made free throws.
At the 6:04 mark, Logan Webb made two foul shots and Scott led, 4-3. Cam Cottrill fired in a 20-foot jump shot and Poca was up by one. But that didn’t last long as Eric May gave Scott a 6-5 edge. Three straight buckets by Scott offset a free throw for Poca to put the home team up, 12-6 with 3:26 left in the quarter. The Hawk scores included two by Sigmon and one by Logan Webb.
A layup followed by a three-point shot from Frampton cut the margin to 12-11 with 1:58 remaining. Following a timeout, Frampton kept the Dot fans happy by drilling another trey to put the visitors ahead, 14-12. After a flubbed Scott possession, Poca ran out the clock without scoring.
Frampton, who was virtually a one-man scoring show for Poca, got the second period started with a bucket to make it 16-12. The teams traded buckets before May zipped a three-pointer to make it 18-17 Poca at the 5:34 mark. Chandler answered with a trey of his own before a layup by Matt Dolan. The standout senior was relatively quiet offensively on the evening.
Frampton kept his scoring parade going with another bucket, as the first half ended with Poca comfortably ahead, 28-21.
It was Scott ball to start the second half and it took a minute and six seconds for Sigmon to cut the lead to five. Frampton drilled another three and it was 31-23 with 5:37 left in the third. A putback by Chandler at the four-minute mark gave the Dots a 33-23 margin. Little did anyone realize then that Poca would not score again until a half-second remained in the game. That meant the powerful Dots of Coach Allen Osborne went more than 11 minutes without scoring.
With no Poca offense on the floor, Scott began its comeback. Dylyn Brown sparked the Hawks, hitting a free throw and a wide-open layup to cut the score to 33-26. Following a Poca timeout, Dylyn Brown sank a putback and it was 33-28 with 1:32 left in the third stanza.
As Scott Coach Nick Cabell exhorted his troops, stomping and screaming, the period ended with the Hawks down by just five.
The fourth quarter was all-Scott although neither offense sparkled. A layup by Dylyn Brown 19 seconds into the final canto cut the lead to 33-30. Poca, with their offense obviously out of sync, continued their futile offense and when Webb hit a layup at the 5:36 spot the margin was just one.
After Frampton traveled to give the ball to Scott, Dylyn Brown’s putback gave the Hawks their incredible 34-33 edge and the huge crowd roared its approval. Osborne continued to switch his line-up and called several timeouts to calm his boys but apparently to no avail.
Coming out of one timeout, Frampton missed a long shot try and then Jacob Payne walked to give the ball to the Skyhawks.
Poca was also handicapped by having few fouls called on them in the second half, leading them to have to foul repeatedly in the closing seconds to try to put Scott on the line. But when Cody Brown drilled his only score of the night, a three-pointer with 27.3 showing, it was all over for the Dots.
Oddly, Poca let more than 16 seconds tick off the clock before fouling Webb. His two free throws stretched the margin to 39-33 and victory was in hand for the Hawks.
Poca’s Cottrill finally scored with .5 on the game clock for the final margin.
Webb was the only Hawk scoring in double figures, with 10. Dylyn Brown added nine; May, seven; Sigmon, six; Dolan, four; and Cody Brown, three for Scott.
Frampton led the game scoring, with 18 for Poca before going silent in the final quarter.
