Mabel Skeenes Barker, of Leroy, WV died June 21, 2013 at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, WV four days short of her 99th birthday.
Born June 25, 1914 at Turtle Creek in Boone County, WV, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Skeenes. Mrs. Barker was saved at Olive Branch Baptist church at a young age and remained faithful in her witness and testimony to Jesus Christ, her Redeemer, for her entire life.
As a testament to her steadfast devotion to Jesus Christ, Mrs. Barker was awarded Faithful Attendance for 32 straight years at Mill Creek Baptist Church in Frozen Camp, WV.
She was also a retired elementary school teacher after 35 years of service in Boone County, WV. During her younger years, she attended Broaddus College (now Alderson-Broadus), Morris Harvey College (now Charleston University), and graduated from Marshall College (now Marshall University).
Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bethel Barker, in 1999 and also by her grandson Mark Woodrum, her great-grandson Jonathan Acree, her son-in-law Phil Acree, three sisters and one brother.
Mrs. Barker is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Herman Woodrum of Ripley, WV; daughter Carolyn Acree of Leroy, WV; five grandsons and their wives: John and Michele Woodrum of Bainbridge, GA, Paul and Laura Woodrum of Bremerton, WA, Phil and Brenda Acree of Ripley, WV; Michael and Pam Acree of Zebulon, NC, and Eric and Sylvia Acree of Sierra Vista, AZ; 15 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at Mill Creek Baptist Church, Frozen Camp, WV on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 with Pastor Bob Keen officiating. Interment followed the service at the Fairplain Cemetery.
